Storing & Moving Tips
To help make storing and moving experiences as efficient and easy as possible, the experts at Sierra Mobile Storage have provided the following suggestions and information. Take your time. Have your container scheduled to arrive on a date that gives you plenty of time to load all your belongings. You can choose to have your container a few days, weeks, or even a month before your move date. Keep your container as long as you need, so you can pack and load at your own pace, on your schedule.
Want help with packing, loading or unloading? We’re happy to refer you to trusted independent packing professionals. They are also a great resource for determining how large or how many containers you’ll need.
Make sure that you have enough space for delivery of your container. Allow for a clearance of 9 feet wide, 9 feet high, and up to 22 feet long. If the surface is sloped, have wooden or concrete blocks ready to help our delivery professional level the container (if that’s important to you). Paved surfaces are preferred. If the surface isn’t paved, please let us know.
Ask your homeowner association, apartment or condo management if there are any restrictions regarding placement of portable containers at or near your residence.
Check laws and permit requirements for street placement if you’re planning to place your container on the street.
Order or collect boxes, tape, moving straps, bungee cords, etc. you will need to secure your belongings inside the container. We recommend that you load your container evenly by weight, front to back and side to side. We will do our best to keep your container level. However, some shifting may occur during loading, unloading and transport.
Start organizing and packing your belongings. Empty, defrost, and clean any refrigerators and freezers at least 24 hours before moving day. Food storage should be limited to canned goods only! Label boxes clearly on all sides as you pack to make unpacking easier. If you will not be unloading all your belongings in one day, give some thought as to what you will need first in your new home and load those items in the container last. Please call us as soon as possible if you find that you’ll need more containers for your move.
Confirm with your insurance company that your possessions are covered during transit and storage.
Clear communication and up-to-date information are vital and we’ll work with you to make your move as smooth and stress-free as possible! To help ensure that we are prepared for each delivery, we utilize Google Earth and Zillow online, to get clear pictures of your property and neighborhood before your delivery date. If no images are available, we will typically do an actual drive-by. You’ll get a call or text from us a day or two out, to see if there are any last minute adjustments to your desired delivery or pick up. We’ll then give you a delivery time window for when you can expect us. We will also text you the day of delivery or pick up to notify you when we are about 30 minutes away.
Having someone at your home who can show us the exact spot you’d like your container placed is helpful, but if you can text us photos, drawings or a detailed description of where you’d like it, you may not need to be present.
